High tensile strength steel wires and strands are used in construction and their main purpose is to increase the tensile strength of concrete structures and to create the necessary tension and stress, according to previously established parameters. The wires and strands are installed by pre-stressing.
Pre-stressing may be carried out either by pre-tensioning before the application of concrete (the manufacture of pre-stressed concrete elements) or through tensioning after the application of concrete (the construction of posttensioned concrete elements).
The same pre-stressing principle is used for ground anchors, which transmit tensile loads to the embedded strand and anchor.
The idea of using high tensile strength steel wire and strand as a variant of classic post-tensioning was developed for use in a type of bridge known as a cable stay bridge.
A special application of high tensile strength steel is for suspended structures, in particular suspension bridges.
